Well yes it seems you can* the guys at geosoft works could not wait for the new nano sim to come with their new iPhone 5 for they chopped and filed their own SIMs down to size.
The template they posted can be printed out and used to shape and size your exsisting SIM card.

If you dont like the idea of getting out your cutters, measuring rule and file I have provided a link to purchase a cutter / shaper from Amazon.
